Do we really want a President who is not subject to
Congressional oversight? A President who
is above the law? Who can do whatever he
pleases without fear of consequences?
This is what President Trump and Attorney General Barr are trying to
shove down our throats.
Do we really want a leader of the Senate who ignores his
Constitutional responsibilities? The
oath of office taken by every senator reads "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the
Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic;
that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this
obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and
that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I
am about to enter: So help me God."
Yet Mitch McConnell has consistently put party before country and
ignored his duties. From his refusal to
allow consideration of President Obama's nominee for the Supreme Court to his
refusal to consider legislation passed by the House and sent on to the Senate
for consideration, he has displayed a total refusal to abide by the oath he took
when he entered the Senate.
These people are
destroying our country. They are
encouraging a contempt for law and for the institutions of our government that
may never heal. The President is as well
encouraging a contempt for a free press and for science—a contempt for
truth. I know many people understand all
too well how dangerous this is. History
is full of examples of what can happen when these things become the norm. But it is also clear that far too many people
do not comprehend, or choose to ignore, what is happening.
I'm an old
man. I am unlikely to live to see much
of the chaos that will inevitably result if this continues. But I fear for what my children and
grandchildren will face . . . the death of our democracy . . . the death of our
planet as we know it.
Trump and his cronies and
those Republicans who are unwilling to stand up against this continuing assault
on the Constitution and on truth should not be simply judged in contempt of
Congress. They are in contempt of
America itself!! One can only hope that
history delivers on them the punishment they deserve.
